Are Gold Connectors Worth It for Audio Cables?

Shiny ≠ Better Sound

Let’s cut through the marketing noise: Gold-plated connectors won’t make you sound better.

Despite what flashy packaging or audiophile forums might suggest, gold isn’t some magical ingredient that improves your tone. In fact, when it comes to conductivity, gold is actually worse than copper, the very material inside your cable.

So, what’s the deal with gold connectors?

🎧 Gold Doesn’t Improve Sound

Gold plating doesn't enhance your signal. The layer is incredibly thin, generally just a few tens of microns, and its only job is to cover the underlying metal (usually brass or nickel) and prevent corrosion.

Here’s the key: Gold doesn’t corrode. That’s its real advantage.

In environments where moisture, sweat, or humidity could cause traditional connectors to tarnish over time, gold stays clean. This can help maintain a reliable connection, especially in gear that’s left plugged in for long periods.

But in terms of sound quality? You won’t hear a difference between a gold-plated plug and a non-gold one in a properly functioning system.

⚡ Conductivity: Silver > Copper > Gold

Gold is often misunderstood as being the most conductive metal. It’s not.

Here’s a quick breakdown of metal conductivity (from best to worst, among common options):

  1. Silver
  2. Copper
  3. Gold
  4. Brass/Nickel (used in many cheap connectors)

So why don't we often use silver? Yes it is more conductive, but it oxidises quickly. Copper is fantastic but needs protection for long lasting reliability.

🛠️ So, Are They Worth It?

Yes, but not for the reasons people think. Gold connectors don’t sound better, but  at Neat Cables we use gold-plated Neutrik connectors as standard. The cost difference of the microns-thin gold layer is surprisingly small but the reliability improvements of minimising corrosion are definitely real.

TL;DR: Should You Go for Gold?

  • 🔊 No sound improvement - gold is less conductive than copper
  • 🧪 No corrosion - that’s gold’s real strength
  • 🔌 Helps long-term reliability, not audio quality
